Wooden Camel Bell - Ethiopia

This type of bell was very common in North Africa. It would have been used on the single-hump dromedary camel, a domesticated animal used for ferrying cargo and people over long distances in the deserts of the Middle East and Horn of Africa. A camel can go without water for seventeen days, and when they do find water can drink up to 136 litres at a time, giving them an advantage over the horse in the desert. Camels would sometimes be left to wander, and a bell would alert its owner to the camel's whereabouts.
