The Songhaïs are a people in the Niger River valley, between the Sahel and the Sahara, who live mainly from agriculture and animal husbandry, as well as crafts. They grow rice on the banks of the Niger River, wheat and millet on the uplands and in the valleys, and also keep many livestock: camels, cattle, goats, sheep, donkeys, horses and poultry.

They have traditionally been one of the key West African ethnic groups associated with caravan trade.
