Wonki Ware

The word Wonki means not perfectly round — and that philosophy lies at the heart of Wonki Ware. Subtle irregularity, combined with bold colours and distinctive patterns, turns every piece of tableware into a one-of-a-kind object.

Wonki Ware was founded in 1999 by Di Marshall along South Africa’s beautiful Garden Route. What started as a creative pastime soon evolved into a small studio that became a gathering place for local ceramicists and creatives. Today, Wonki Ware is recognised as one of South Africa’s great success stories, with its handmade ceramics featured in prestigious stores around the world.

Each piece is entirely hand-shaped, hand-painted and glazed, passing through 18 pairs of skilled hands. Around 70 dedicated artisans, often from underprivileged backgrounds, now work in the studio, bringing pride, craftsmanship and care to every item. Each piece carries not only visual character, but also a human and social story.

Wonki Ware is known for its durability and quality. Designed for everyday use, the tableware is microwave and dishwasher safe, combining practicality with timeless appeal.

The true strength of Wonki Ware lies in mix & match. Colours, patterns and shapes are made to be combined freely, allowing you to create a table setting that feels personal, vibrant and ever-evolving. Wonki Ware celebrates individuality, imperfection and the beauty of handmade design.
