Authentic large iron hoe currency from Afo people of northern Nigeria. These are the largest of the hoe shaped currencies and not used as tools. Instead used for major purchases of land or animals. Also used as dowry to compensate a family for the loss of a daughter. Mounted on a black iron display stand.

Objects that served as currency - especially in the form of a hoe - were used throughout much of North Africa, as money and in agriculture - some of the smaller knives were transformed into functional tools. The Eloyi people forged some of the largest and heaviest money hoes, which were often given by the groom to the bride's family as payment. The hoe's ability to work the earth and sow seeds also symbolised the couple's future children.
