These sisal baskets are made by the Basket Weaver Group at Kasigau, in south eastern Kenya. Basket weaving is a tradition in the Taita culture. The aim of the Basket Weaver Group is to become less dependent on subsistence agriculture by earning an income from weaving sisal baskets. Agriculture is unreliable in this semi-arid area, where the absence of rain regularly destroys complete harvests.
The small baskets are fun to use as a plant holder. Each basket has a little tag on it with the name of the woman who created it.
