This wooden buffalo head once adorned the façade of a noble family in Sulawesi. The Toraja live in Sulawesi where the buffalo play an important role in their culture. The buffalo is a status symbol but also has a sacred meaning because it is sacrificed during religious ceremonies such as funerals.
The Toraja have 2 types of houses. The normal house is called 'banua', the traditional house the 'tongkonan'. Tongkon means to sit. The house is seen as the seat of the ancestor who founded it and watches over his descendants. The outer walls of the 'tongkon' consist of beautifully cut panels with geometric motifs or stylized images of animals. The 'kabongo', a realistic wooden buffalo head, adorns the facades of the higher nobility.
