This chair was made in southwestern Ethiopia by people from the Gurage tribe. Stools and small chairs are everywhere nowadays in African society. Although they are primarily everyday utensils, they often reflect the social status of the owner. Because this specimen has a handrail, it was probably used by the elderly or a leader in the village.
